Assistive Technology & AAC

Assistive Technology (AT)

Assistive technology is any device, software, or equipment that helps people work around their challenges. Some examples of assistive technology are text-to-speech and word prediction software. Assistive technology also includes low-tech tools, too, like pencil grips.

An AT assessment can help your child have a level playing field with his peers when reading, writing, and participating in class. The assessment will identify what tools will be most helpful for your child to be able to fully participate in their educational setting.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a term that is used to describe various methods of communication that can help people who are unable to consistently use verbal speech to communicate. AAC methods vary and may be personalized to meet each child’s needs. Some may use it all of the time. Others may say some words but use AAC for longer sentences or with people they don’t know well.

We offer AAC assessments for children with significant speech or language problems that may need AAC to help them communicate. This can include both basic systems such as picture cards and high-tech systems such as the use of speech-generating devices.
